Three Infants Dead One Brain Damaged

April 23, 2012- Two midwives have agreed to a $5 million settlement with a couple who sued them for medical malpractice after their baby suffered permanent brain damage at the Baby Place in Meridian, Idaho.  Midwives Coleen Goodwin and her daughter, Jerusha Goodwin, reached the agreement to avoid a jury trial, said Eric Rossman, attorney for Adam and Victoria Nielson. The trial had been set to begin on Monday in Boise. Rossman said it’s likely that the Goodwins will seek bankruptcy protection. Which of course means the Nielson may never see a dime to help with the life long costs of caring for their child.

The  midwife licenses of these two midwives were finally suspended by the Idaho Board of Midwifery on March 23, 2012 leaving the Nielson’s child with permanent brain damage and  3  infants dead, one  in June 2010, October 2010 and August 2011.

These  horrific outcomes were preventable.  Two out of three of these midwife involved deaths will be counted as hospital deaths as the infants ultimately died in hospital.

UPDATE:

“The two women involved in the case, Coleen and Jerusha Goodwin, are no longer licensed to be midwives and are banned from working in Idaho.

The Goodwins, who worked at the Baby Place in Meridian, acted in “serious, unprofessional” ways and broke the rules of their profession, the Board of Midwifery said. It suspended the Goodwins in the spring of 2012, after claims that the women acted wrongly while overseeing births.”

The Greenhouse Birth Center Gets A New Name.

Not even two days after closing of the Greenhouse Birth Center, LLC to avoid any consequences in civil court, the same midwives have forged their own new business. Never mind that two of them have filed for bankruptcy to dismiss accountability for wrongful death(s), and they pulled the same move with the business itself.

One Baby Dies, One has Cerebral Palsy

ASTORIA, Ore. – On August 4, 2009, Mindy and Phillip Bizzell were in the middle of a nightmare…… baby Henry was feet first, something the Bizzells say their midwife never checked for at any point. So in the middle of labor, Henry got stuck….

When they finally got to the hospital, it took a doctor three tries to extract Henry with forceps. After CPR, Henry’s little heart starting beating again, but only for 3.5 more days.

… Because Roloff is unlicensed in Oregon, the Bizzells have no recourse after Henry’s death, no consequences for the midwife, or even an investigation….

Kristine Andrews’ story is different; she walked away from her birth with her son. But he is disabled, which she blames in part on her midwives from Motherwise in Bend.. Andrews said her midwives didn’t take her medical tests seriously, like when her blood pressure soard at the end of her pregnancy.”They said ‘no, you’re fine, we just want you to eat a cucumber every day,’” remembered Andrews. ”They didn’t know if he’ll be able to walk, they don’t know if he’ll be able to talk, they don’t know if he’ll be able to sit up, he can’t do that now still.”Andrews said she blames her midwives for ignoring warning signs during pregnancy and labor…The official diagnosis came a year later: cerebral palsy…”This is a lifetime of hardship for our son,” said Andrews.

Liz lost her daughter Aquila:

“My daughter Aquila was born on my living-room couch last December. She was perfectly formed—eight pounds even, with a head full of dark hair. Tragically, she died minutes before her birth. She had developed an infection called Chorioamnionitis from prolonged rupture of membranes, and during labor, my placenta peeled away from my womb, depriving her of oxygen…”

Home Birth Horror Stories:

….“When most families plan for a home birth, they don’t also plan for a funeral. I certainly didn’t. But that is how my home-birth story ended.”…

“……Yes, babies do die in hospitals, too. However, I believe my daughter would have lived, had I made the choice to birth in a safer setting with a highly trained care provider. I will live with this knowledge for the rest of my life….”

“…..Families who have lost a baby perhaps because of choosing to have a home birth are hidden away, aside from the few (like myself) who have blogged about what happened. My hope is that people who are considering a home birth know the risks of this choice…”

My Home Birth Went Terribly Wrong

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2006

Home Births are dangerous too!

“…Hi everyone out there. My name is Amber and I am a college educated stay at home mom from North County San Diego (San Marcos) Ca. I am writing my first ever Blog to tell you of my midwife led homebirth experience that went terribly wrong. I write this only to tell the “other side”. This type of story was not out on the internet when I chose to Birth at home and is still not one of the first 10 popup ups on the net. My hope is that someone considering a home birth will read this and become as informed as possible to be the strongest advocate possible for themselves and their baby…”

Homebirth Gone Wrong

Saturday, February 24, 2007

… “A pediatrics resident wrote that at his NICU at any given time there are 2 or 3 babies with brain damage because of inadequate resuscitation at a home birth and asked the obvious question: How can you be responsible for the birth of a baby and not know how to resuscitate the child should something go wrong.”

“…He had posted a moving description of a baby in his care, but has removed the post out of concern that it may be seen by the family and increase their grief. I am removing the quote also, but if you have already read it, you know that it provides a frightening glimpse at how easily things can spin out of control at a homebirth, and how the baby can end up with permanent brain damage.….”

VBA3C homebirth: ruptured uterus, brain damaged baby

“…..A girl who I went to college with had a baby around 10 last night & both are in critical condition. This is her 4th baby. She had 3 previous c-sections & was trying for a VBAC homebirth. Her uterus ruptured in several places & she lost a lot of blood. She is intubated & had 2 blood transfusions. She isn’t out of the woods yet, by any means. The baby was born blue & unresponsive, was resuscitated, but showing signs of possible brain damage.”
“…All of this leaves me with questions for the folks at ICAN who encourage women to take these life threatening risks:
Will you use Lori as a role model for VBA3C? Or will you wash your hands of her and pretend this never happened?
….Update (2/12/11): Vera died last night….”
